On Turning Thirty.

Do you remember playing childhood games like Hide 'n Seek, Freeze Tag, and Kick the Can? Do you remember running through sprinklers on a hot day? These were special summer rituals.

Did you ever stop to think of it, though? All kids play those games and the minute they stop, they begin to grow old. It's almost as though playing Hide 'n Seek keeps them young. Did you ever notice that?

You don't believe in magic, do you? There was a time when you did; I did. When your baby teeth came out you put it under the pillow for the tooth fairy. When you woke up Easter Sunday you'd wander around your yard searching for eggs that the Easter Bunny left behind. What happened? What changed you? Was it time that did it, or was it something else?

"We grew up, that's all. Everybody gets old", you say. But maybe there are people that stay young. Maybe they know a secret they keep from the rest of us. Maybe the fountain of youth isn't a fountain at all; maybe it's a way of looking at things - a way of thinking.

Look how I've changed. My knees can't hold up for more than two pickup games of basketball. My lungs are coated with tar from years of smoking. I'm used up; worn out by a lifetime. But, and for better or worse, I still see this world as a giant playground made for exploring, scuffing my knees from the occasional fall, and chasing girls.
