who cares?

Is Julia Roberts' giving birth to twins really a matter of public importance? I was just on cnn.com and this was one of the top headlines. How is this newsworthy?

I will never understand people who follow gossip columns or watch paparazzi television shows like "Extra!" or "Access Hollywood". I understand entertainment is entertainment, but c'mon! Are things in life really that bland to have to undertake a voyeuristic approach to life? Do we really need to know what Sarah Jessica Parker eats to keep her slim figure or the zany events that transpired during Renee Zellweger's most recent walk down the red carpet? Who gives a shit, really?!

And have you ever tried watching one of these shows? Not only do they subject their viewers to complete trash, but in order to keep your attention to said trash, I've noticed the programs' excessive use of flashing lights and quick camera pans. They're constantly force-feeding you thousands of images per second because they know their average viewer has the attention span of a gnat. It's dizzying. I've made it a habit to close my eyes whenever there's excessive use of flashing lights during theatrical trailers, advertisements, and television shows. I think it's one of the cheapest tactics in preying upon consumers/viewers who don't know any better. I know we live in the Internet Age where we want all our news in nicely summarized snippets, our e-mails to the point, and blogs that have lots of shiny pictures with the tiniest bit of content, but still...

I'm not saying all programs should be educational (fuck, I used to watch pro wrestling in my youth). But I think gossip shows and magazines are the biggest common denominators of conformity. They represent a small part of what's wrong with culture today: a society of mindless, pop-culture zombies where worshipping ice-rockin'-accidentally-let-my-X-rated-home-movies-out-lip-synching-on-live-TV-even-though-i'm-supposed-to-be-a-musician celebrities who challenge you to drink Pepsi, instead of challenging your mind and your perception of truth.

There. I said it.
