day-to-day
Thanks for all the encouraging e-mails and comments. It's reassuring to know that other people can empathize.
In the past four days, I've managed to eat like a king at fancy restaurants, drink at fancy bars, and party at fancy clubs. What a difference a day makes. The explanation is simple: two employed friends, DC and John, were in nyc this past weekend and treated me on several occasions. I'd forgotten what it was like to eat at a place that didn't have combo numbers next to a lit-up transparency of your meal, or how enjoyable a glass of wine is compared to a cheap Michelob Light.
Having money is a powerful thing. Although I've dismissed it as being an ultimate source of happiness, it can certainly bring temporary pleasures. Like when you haven't been 'out' in weeks due to lack of money, then all of a sudden you're at 'People' -a lounge on the LES- and you're being treated to $39 bottles of wine like it's going out of style. Or when that same night, your other friend arrives into the city, buys you shots of Patron and convinces you after already partying until 2am that we should all hit up 'The Frying Pan', a seasonal venue located on a pier. The latter venue is worthy of further discussion.
The party was located on the pier in the west-side of Manhattan as well as on an old lighthouse boat docked next to it. The people there were all beautiful and it felt like I was in a music video. Walking down the multiple levels of the boat was a bit confusing. It was like getting lost inside Morpheus's ship, The 'Nebuchadnezzar'. But deep down inside, in the belly of the ship, there was an intimate yet psyched crowd of people dancing to the beats of a pretty decent DJ/band. The whole thing smelled of an offshore rave! The night was capped off with having pizza for breakfast and getting home at 8am. And, of course, what is a night of excess drinking and debauchery without something controversial happening? I ran into this girl i was casually dating for a few months that night. First time i'd seen her since October of last year, and I'll admit it was really good seeing her again. We'd made plans to 'hang out'[read: have meaningless sex leaving me lonelier than before].
Ohhh... loneliness and cheeseburgers [alcohol] are a dangerous mix.
The rest of the weekend was filled with more excess drinking, dancing, retrieving the telephone numbers of two girls and plenty more eating. There is one girl who I met this weekend that seemed particularly cool. More on this another time. Upon eating a giant bacon cheeseburger at Corner Bistro, DC and I went to Magnolia Bakery (of Sex And the City fame) and ordered 2 of their famous cupcakes, a giant slice of red velvet cake, and a heaping serving of banana bread pudding - all specialities.
Ohhh... loneliness and cheeseburgers [along with cupcakes] are a dangerous mix.
One week ago, I was in dire straits. I was a fucking mess. Now, I've got financial aid coming in for the summer (although i have to take summer school now), I have a job interview tomorrow, and my curiosity for a particular someone is piqued. Although my problems aren't entirely gone, I've learned a valuable lesson: in dark times, friends will be there for you - hopefully wealthy ones.
