california love

i am DONE with my first year of law school and back on the west coast for some much-needed R&R. Here's a quick update of newsworthy events (excuse my lack of detail - HEY, I'M ON VACATION!)

Saturday (5/17):
after a connection in baltimore and one unexpected one in nashville, i arrive in san diego. but not after sitting next to a sweet elderly couple that went on about their horses for 8 hours straight. bill, todd and aaron pick me up,but not after taking their sweet-ass time to finish consumption of carne asada burritos (hey, can you blame 'em with how good the mexican food is out here?). travis meets us back at bill's place for a little pre-partying, as does bill's girlfriend, "elbow". in celebration of bill's birthday, we wound up at Yardhouse where they give a whole new meaning to "a tall, cold one". they've got over 150 beers on tap and they're famous for serving it in long, blown glass in measurements of half and full yards. several rounds later, we hit up the small dance floor downstairs and made sure to make fools of ourselves.

Sunday (5/18)
blew off my writing competition paper. weather was too nice and the guys hit the links in mission bay. that night we had dinner at my favourite restaurant, Bandar, in downtown sd. perfect as usual. afterwards we shot some pool in the gaslamp district and had to put up w/ bill's and travis' incessant photography. ah boy. travis is an honorary asian tourist in my book.

Monday (5/19)
spent all day at ucsd while the guys went to work and school. certainly a stroll down memory lane, but things done changed round there. it's gotten even bigger, with the addition of the new college and several new research buildings. the chicks look a lot better now than i remember them being back in my hey-day (or maybe it's just b/c everyone in nyc is pale?)

Tuesday (5/20)
my moms picked me up in la jolla and i took her out to george's of the cove for some cliffside/ocean view dining as a belated mother's day gift. she really appreciated the surprise. i'm such a great son. moms takes me shopping where she buys me a new suit from brooks brothers in anticipation of my internship this summer in nyc. new threads are always a plus - especially when mom's buying.

Wednesday (5/21)
i flew into oakland at around 12:30 pm. baby sis is graduating from college already. my how time flies. she picks me up and then we head off to pick up her cap and gown. while on campus, my sister and i decide to have lunch at the campus pub and we share our first "official" beer together; a pitcher to be exact. having recently turned 21 while i was in new york, i haven't had the opportunity to take her drinking yet. girl can drink! and she's actually into beer! my family is the shit. take her into san francisco where we pick up the graduation gift i have waiting for her at tiffany's. she's happy. then it's off to meet eunice and theresa in palo alto for some cajun dining for dinner. it was great to see them as they're not only former ucsd alum, but roommates and friends as well. checked out their new pad in sunnyvale and then we capped off the night at starbucks. drove back 'round midnight and while driving past the sf skyline and bay bridge, i got a little choked up. such a beautiful city this is. i'm definitely planning to live here again someday to raise my family.

Thursday (5/22)
graduation day. 7 am wake-up call and it's off to campus. mom and dad just flew in and it's one big reunion. grand-uncle makes the 1.5 hour drive down from sacramento and meets us at the parking lot. i realized that these things drag on longer each time and the blazing hot sun didn't help matters. but seeing so many attractive college girls in their sun dresses with their california tans makes me miss this place even more. ahh... the golden state.

that's it for now. i'm planning to go to vegas next week for some action and then it's back to the city that never sleeps. see you guys soon.
