apt, bar 13, & rare
It's been a fun-filled past two weekends as i've managed to tear myself away from school and venture out into the seedy nyc clubbing scene. Last Saturday, me and steve went to radha's birthday party at Bar 13, located in union square near nyu. Long story short, i imbibed waaay too much alcohol in too short of a time and the consequences were, well...
AWESOME!
Seriously, i don't know if it's got something to do with the guys out here not really knowing how to dance, or not having any desire to get loose, but none of the guys there really seemed to feel very comfortable out on the dance floor. None, that is, except for me & steve. For that one winter night on january 25 - at that precise moment in time - we owned the floor. I must have danced with 5 different chicks in the span of an hour. It was as though they were lining up, tickets in hand, to check out a carnival ride. We had no shame out there, bustin' out 1986 moves, 70s grooves, and freakin' boobs, yet it all seemed to add to our charm. Shit, at one point i was doin' the freakin' robot. The ROBOT, people!
We could do no wrong.
Needless to say i was exhausted and we headed home, but not before taking part in a slice or two. The rest of the week was my normal cut & dry schedule, w/ the exception of two things: Steve's sister Elaine was in town and she ended up staying at our place for two nights. She took us out for dinner on wednesday to a nice south-american restaurant called Chicama. Since it was restaurant week in nyc (bling-bling restaurants slash their prices and offer a pre-fixe menu to sample the best specialties they have to offer), we loaded up on some mouth-watering ceviche, juicy porterhouse steaks and plantain-ish mashed potatoes, topped off with some coconut sorbet with caramel cake and coffee. I haven't eaten like that since...well, in a long time! The other cool thing was that i attended a health law symposium on bioterrorism. Very interesting to hear the various safety measure acts that were being lobbied for post-9/11 and their relation to individual rights in this country. Lots of due process issues. Afterwards, they hosted a reception with tons of beautiful FREE FOOD! You could tell who the law students as we wasted no time in gorging ourselves in brie, goat cheese, strawberries, sushi and wine.
As for last night, i don't remember much as i ended up drinking 6 beers, a tequila shot, scotch, a vodka martini with extra olives, champagne and i think another beer. I got to check out a couple places in the meat-packing district of manhattan, which is where all the hot new bars and clubs are concentrated. I went to bonnie's friend's birthday party at a club called Rare. It was kinda ghetto, and the music was slow at first, but things picked up. Afterwards, i left to meet up with steve and his friend, eugenia at APT(short for apartment). Where these people come up with such clever names i have no idea. This was one of those upscale bars with white linens, fancy decorations and overpriced drinks that i so love to avoid these days. We got in for free by mentioning eugenia's name, although i have no idea why since there was no party or special occasion there. I scored some free champagne from this director/actor who claims he's been on sex and the city, the sopranos and a plethora of other shows that i don't get to watch anymore. I swear, what is it w/ new york actors and their desire to tell every stranger how great they are and what projects they're working on? (uh... this is the part where you don't draw any parallels between actors and people who put up a homepage. thank you. and now back to the story...) It happens so much that i find it hard to believe anyone anymore as to what they really do. It's not like you even have to ask. They just jump into telling you what they do. Anyway, at least i scored some free champagne.
The evening was capped off with a trip to the local diner where, much to the encouragement of her friends, i ended up getting this cute chick's phone #.
Ahh... how much more exciting my life would be if school wasn't in the way!
Today, i'm trying to recover from a serious hangover and get some studying done. Tonight, i'm going to meet up with some law school friends at La Paella - a place known for its tapas & sangria. I'm really l ooking forward to this as the last time i've had spanish food was over the summer in barcelona. I can still smell the paella, baby! Arriba!
